Female pattern baldness (FPB) OR Female pattern hair loss (FPHL)
What is female pattern baldness [FPB] ?
What is female pattern hair loss [FPHL] ?
Female pattern baldness [FPB] OR Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is common balding in females. Around 40% menopausal women show signs of FPB. In FPB, there is diffuse thinning of hair on the scalp due to increased hair
shedding or a reduction in hair volume, or both. FPB has a strong genetic predisposition. There are many genes that contribute to this condition, and these genes could be inherited from either parent, or both. Genetic testing to assess risk of balding is not recommended, as it is unreliable. It is also not clear if androgens (male sex hormones) play a role in FPB, although androgens have a clear role in male pattern baldness. The majority of women with FPB have normal levels of androgens in their bloodstream.
alopecia How long does it take for FPB to progress?
alopecia FPB can affect women in any age group but more commonly ,it occurs after menopause. The hair loss process is not constant. It is not uncommon to have excess hair loss for 3-6 months, followed by periods of stability lasting 6-18 months. Progress of FPB can be variable in each individual.
alopecia What can be the effects of female pattern hair loss?
alopecia For females, to look good is to feel good. . Hair loss causes significant psychological distress. Compared to unaffected women, those affected have a more negative body image and are less able to cope with daily functioning. Hair loss can be associated with low self-esteem, depression, introversion, and feelings of unattractiveness. It is especially hard to live in a society that places great value on youthful appearance and attractiveness.
Frequently asked questions
alopecia Should I have any hormone tests done?
alopecia For making diagnosis, required blood tests are female and male sex hormone levels as well as thyroid function. The majority of women affected by FPB do not have underlying hormonal abnormalities. However a few women with FPB are found to have excessive levels of androgens. These women tend also to suffer from acne, irregular menses and excessive facial and body hair. These symptoms are characteristic of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) although some women with PCOS do not experience hair loss.
alopecia Is there any perfect cure for female pattern baldness [FPB] ? Will I get my lost hair back with any medical treatment ?
alopecia No. There is nothing like 100% perfect cure for FPB. In most cases, FPB is known as permanent type of changes. The chances of regrowth are always poor with any medical treatment however in few cases regrowth can be seen.
alopecia I had seen an advertise of XYZ product as a cure for Female pattern baldness. Should I try it? My friend told me that certain vitamins [biotin, zinc etc.] are useful in FPB. Is it true? I'm going through menopause now and having hair loss. Will hormone replacement therapy reverse the hair loss?
alopecia You may find so many advertise as a cure for FPB however those advertise are prepared just to increase the sale of their products. There is no commercial product which is approved as cure for female pattern baldness. Vitamin supplement will not help you, unless you are deficient in certain vitamins. Hormone replacement therapy is unlikely to reverse the hair loss.
alopecia What is an Ayurveda ? How it is useful for hair loss treatment ?
alopecia An Ayurveda is the traditional medical science of India, which originated over 5,000 years ago. There are so many herbal & natural treatment options mentioned in Ayurveda books as a treatment for different types of hair loss.
alopecia How Dr Rohit's Ayurveda therapy is useful in female pattern baldness ? Is there any side effect of the therapy ? What exactly in the treatment? What is the pharmacological action of these herbs ?
spacer spacer
alopecia Dr Rohit's herbal Therapy is based on Ayurveda concepts. The treatment contains topical herbal oils and herbal paste which are free from any side effects. It helps to slow down the progress of balding and in few cases, it also helps to re-grow new hair. However the pharmacological action of how herbal treatment works, is yet not perfectly understood.
alopecia Is there any guarantee about the result? What will minimum time duration to see the effect of herbal treatment ? What will be duration of the treatment ?
alopecia Guarantee is a marketing word which is being used to increase sale of commercial products. Ayurveda treatment is based on basic nature of the patient so it is difficult to give any type of guarantee about the results. Result may vary from person to person. In most cases, herbal therapy takes 4-6 months to start showing its effect however in few cases, it may take 9-12 months. Duration of the treatment could be variable in each individual.
alopecia I have seen few pictures about the results of herbal therapy on your site Can i expect same results in my case ?
alopecia Entire Ayurvedic herbal science is based on basic nature (Prakruti) which can be different in each individual so results may vary from person to person. One can not compare the result with others.
