Alopecia Areata Or Patchy Hair Loss

All About Alopecia Areata & Dr. Rohit's Natural Treatments

Alopecia areata treatment

Alopecia areata is a common autoimmune disease that results in hair loss on the scalp and any other parts of the body. It occurs in males and females of all ages but most often the onset can be seen in childhood. This common but very challenging and capricious disease affects approximately 1.7 percent of the world population and can have a profound effect on one's physical and emotional state. Alopecia areata usually starts with a small bald patch on scalp but in some cases, it can be seen on other part of the body too. Alopecia Areata patch on beard is known as alopecia barbae, complete hair loss on scalp is known as alopecia totalis and entire body hair loss is known as alopecia universalis.

What are the symptoms of alopecia areata ? How it may progress ?

The typical pattern is one or more bald patches appear on the scalp or any other part of the body. These tend to be around in shape, and about the size of a large coin. A Family member, friend, or hairdresser may be the first person to notice the bare patch or patches. Apart from the hairless patch, the scalp usually looks healthy. In few cases, the patient may feel redness, scaling, mild burning, or a slight itchy feeling on an affected part. Quite often the bald patch or patches re-grow hair within a few months. If hair grows back it may not have its primary color and looks grey or white. The original color eventually returns after several months. Sometimes, the initial hairless patch re-grows hair whilst a new bare patch is developing. Often several small hairless patches develop and merge into a larger bald area. Patches on body hair, beard, eyebrows, or eyelashes can be seen in some cases. Large bald patches develop in some people. Whole scalp hair loss is known as alopecia totalis and complete body hair loss is known as alopecia universalis. The nails are affected in about 1 in five cases and can become pitted or ridged. When a bald patch first develops, it is difficult to predict how it will progress. Alopecia areata behaves in a different way in everyone. However below are the classifications of how it may progress.

Researchers are trying to determine what triggers the disease, and whether it's from within the body or from environmental factors. There are no diagnostic tests available which can predict the onset and behavior of alopecia areata. However there may be some hereditary factors which play a roll in hair loss, in about 20% of cases people with alopecia areata have a family member who are also affected. Below area few common factors which are known as a trigger for Alopecia areata.

Most of the oral medicines available in the market are known as placebo products. Ancient ayurvedic books have described alopecia areata as indralupt and there are so many natural treatments indicated which have been used successfully in India and other Asian countries. Topical Ayurvedic herbs and oils are effective to stimulate hair follicles and have proved a safe and best alternate to cope up with alopecia areata. However the exact pharmacological action of these herbs and oils are not yet known.

Why Dr. Rohit's alopecia areata herbal treatment is best option for alopecia areata ?

Alopecia areata treatment advantages

If I start the treatment when will I see the result ? What will the duration of my treatment ?

In most cases, natural therapy takes 3-4 months to start showing its effect but in few cases, it may take 9-12 months. Duration of treatment can be variable in each individual. However approximate duration of treatment is given as under :

Primary Alopecia Areata natural treatment 12 to 18 months
Patchy hair loss treatment 18 to 24 months
Alopecia Areata (more than 50% hairloss, alopecia totalis or universalis) 36 to 48 months

Does natural therapy make the patient lifetime free from alopecia areata ?

Alopecia areata is an idiopathic [no reason found] medical condition. No therapy can guarantee that a patient will remain symptom free for the rest of the life. Certain circumstances or trigger may cause reoccurrences. However compare to other treatments, results with natural therapy are long lasting and recurrence rate is very low.

Are there any side effects of natural treatment ?

Compare to other treatments, topical natural treatment is known as safest way to cope up with alopecia areata. There are no known side effects of natural treatments.

Once I start the natural treatment, will it stop progress of alopecia areata ? Is it normal to get new patch even though I am using natural therapy ?

If alopecia areata is in active and progressive stage, no treatment can stop it immediately. There are chances of new patches even though you are taking any treatment.

Is there any way to get rapid results ?

No. There is nothing like rapid treatment for alopecia areata. Any therapy will take 4-6 months to yield its results.

I have been diagnosed with alopecia areata, is there any way to know whether it will convert into alopecia totalis or universalis ?

Unfortunately the prognosis for alopecia areata can be variable for each individual. When a bald patch first develops, it is difficult to predict how it will progress. There are no symptoms before bald patches appear or no diagnostic tests available which can predict whether it will convert into alopecia totalis or universalis.

What about extensive alopecia areata where greater than 50 % hair is lost?

Natural treatment definitely helps in such patients. The success ratio is high compare to other treatments, however duration of the treatment varies from person to person. We had seen in our clinical practice that some patients got faster recovery but some took long time to respond natural treatments.

I am a patient of alopecia totalis / alopecia universalis. Will natural therapy work for me ?

Alopecia totalis or universalis are known as extreme stage of alopecia areata and there is no perfect cure for it. We recommend to try natural therapy for minimum 12 months for those patients who are newly diagnosed with alopecia totalis/universalis. After completion of 12 months therapy, if we find some positive results, we recommend to continue the therapy. However if there is no results after 12 months, we recommend to stop the therapy. We do not recommend natural therapy for those patients who have had long history of alopecia totalis / alopecia universalis since last 3 years or more time. It is not well understood how natural therapy gives result in few cases and not in others. The perfect pharmacological action of natural therapy is yet not known.

Is alopecia areata contagious ? Will it spread to my family members ?

Alopecia areata is not a contagious or an infectious disease. It cannot be passed from one to another.

Can the natural treatment be taken with dietary supplements, multivitamins or homeopathic treatment?

Yes, natural treatment can be used with dietary supplements, multivitamins or homeopathic treatment .

Can I use the natural treatment during pregnancy ?

Yes, topical natural treatment is safe during pregnancy. However we recommend to consult your gynecologist before you start natural therapy.

If i start the treatment, will I have to use natural products rest of my life? Once I stop the treatment, will I loose my hair again ?

No. there will be no need to use the natural products rest of your life. In most cases, natural therapy gives long lasting results.

I have been wearing a wig, can I still use these products ?

Yes, you can use the natural products even though you are wearing a wig because natural products are applied at night and washed off in the morning.

Someone told me to apply garlic paste [or onion paste, ginger, jamalgota seeds (croton tiglium)] on affected areas of alopecia areata. Will it help me ?
Alopecia hair fall treatments alopecia areata alopecia areata alopecia areata

Using garlic, ginger, onion, lime, jamalgota seeds, diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP) may destroy hair follicles which may convert into scarring alopecia. As per Ayurveda,Garlic and onion are known for its Tamsik property. They all work in much the same way as mild skin irritants. The more modern version of this type of treatment approach is using Anthralin. Jamalgota (croton) is poisonous seed and causes lot of irritation and even blisters. We recommend not to do such experiments because sometimes it can cause permanent damage to hair follicles and alopecia areata may convert into scarring alopecia.

Someone told me to shave off entire scalp and then i will get new hair on alopecia areata patches. Is it true ?

No. it is not true. If you remove the hair from entire scalp, it will not help to regrow your hair on alopecia areata patches.

While regrowth, I have noticed white hair on affected area of alopecia areata. Will those hair stay lifelong white or eventually I will get my original hair back ?

In few alopecia areata patients, regrowth may start with soft white hair but eventually those hair will change to a normal texture and pigment. Usually after about 2-3 inches of growth, hair starts getting pigmentation. In some individual, hair also become curly but it could be a part of the healing process.
